#31 The Golden Trilobite Prototype Fez

This week's fez is one that has been requested for a long time. I remember it first came up as part of a larger discussion with fans of the comic Girl Genius - a great online "gas-lamp fantasy" comic. Well we get a lot of requests to do fezzes with a specific piece of art on them and unless we have permission I am loathe to capitalize on another artist's endeavors so I avoided the topic of a trilobite fez for some time.

Then as I was perusing the directory of vendors at Comic Con this year, I noticed that Studio Foglio was there and I would have the opportunity to talk to Phil in person. After explaining my position on trilobites and fezzes Phil was quick to point out that he can't really claim ownership of the legendary trilobite but was kind enough to give me clearance to do the fez anyway.

So here is the prototype.

This particular fez was donated to the Indygear Summit for their auction but we have already started to produce more for our website so watch for those to show up very soon.

#30 The Blackshear Fez

Fez of the Week #30 is a bit of a spur of the moment thing. On Wednesday, one of the teachers I work with asked for a sample of my fezzes to show to his students. This is one of those guys that is always there for you when you need anything so I couldn't just bring him something I had in stock and with a name like Blackshear it didn't take long to figure out what needed to be done. When I was getting his head measurement he did request red fabric and I thought a low-profile fez would be a good way to introduce him to the world of brimless hats. So one Sunday I sat down at the computer and worked out the embroidery and sewed up a fez in short order. He'll get to see it this week.

Fez-o-rama in public Nov 7th!

As you may have noticed from the last post we have created the new C-14 Fez to coincide with the Indygear Member Summit at the Queen Mary the 1st weekend of November. Well, as part of their weekend of festivities they have invited us to come down for their Fort MacArthur Day in San Pedro to vend our wares on November 7th as they tour the historic grounds. What is really cool is the base is open to the public and anyone is welcome to come on down and support this historic place.

We will be there from around noon til 4pm and plan to bring down our stock of fezzes. So join us for an afternoon of history, retro clothing, Indiana Jones fans and no shipping fees on fezzes.

The C-14 Arche-Fez

We have a new fez and this time we're doing something a little bit different. The C-14 fez is a collaboration in honor of the IndyGear member summit this year aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach California, and we're proud to be able to present it to you as well. We are just starting production on these and plan to do a limited run for the website. To ensure that you get one of these before your size sells out we are opening up a pre-order opportunity.

These are currently in a PRE-ORDER state, and will be made and shipped AFTER the IndyGear event in mid-November.

The perfect fez for when you're digging about an archaeological excavation, running away from tribe of headhunters, or tracking down some strange stones...

The Goof Fez

This week's fez is a bit of a tribute. Perched high atop the Bali Hai restaurant in San Diego sits the inspiration. I was really turned off by the grotesque visage when I first saw it and years later when reading Sven A Kirsten's brilliant tome "The Book of Tiki" - an endless source of tiki inspiration- I learned a bit of the history behind the Goof. Well it must have struck a chord because a few months ago this popped up in my sketch book. Clearly the goof had left an impression on the malleable parts of my brain.

I suspect that part of the reason I was uncomfortable with the original Goof is how it reminded me of the depictions of the Japanese in the old Warner Bros. propaganda cartoons during WWII. So I transferred the overbite to a mask being worn by the character instead of it being an organic deformation, of course the possibility remains that the wearer is still horribly deformed or perhaps he looks like Clark Gable... that would explain the ears.

As for the 3 letter word written across the top of his mask... well, read it again and then apologize to you mother for your dirty thoughts. You should be ashamed of yourself. We have a habit of putting fezzes on the characters embroidered on our fezzes but in this case the tarboosh would not work so I went with a less than subtle solution.

A very small batch of these have been made and are for sale on our website. If we don't have your size in stock let us know. We will be making more.

#29 Skull & Bone on Tapa Prototype Fez

This week's fez is the prototype of our Skull & Club Signature Edition on a two tone low profile fez featuring black wavy velvet and green tapa print bark cloth. The Skull & Club first appeared on our embroidered work shirts and was only featured on a Fez of the Week over a year ago. I had been wanting to get back to work on this design but it wasn't until I went digging through my personal stash of fabric that I knew what to do with such a vertical design.

Only 13 of these Signature Edition fezzes were made and the only difference between the production version and this one is a slightly brighter green thread on the skull moko.

#28 The Proto-Pele Fez

This is the prototype of the Pele Fez that debuted at Tiki Oasis 9 this past August. This fez features my Pele design that languished in my sketchbook for well over a year. Originally I intended to have the hair represented by a root ball but just couldn't get the look I wanted for Pele. I'm sure she is much happier with her current 'do.

The only difference between the prototype and the final run is a slight color variation. Here the details of the face are rendered in a dark brown as opposed to black in the production run. This creates a more subtle visage and a bit of a vintage feel for the fez.
